Set in Paris in the late 19th century, this movie depicts the life of artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Noted for its color cinematography, Director John Huston wanted the film to look as if it had been directed by Toulouse-Lautrec. Huston and the film's star, José Ferrer, were nominated for Academy Awards. Marcel Vertès won two Oscars for his work on the movie: Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction.

Fratello Marionettes’ The Carnival of the Animals

Who’s pulling the strings? The Fratello Marionettes, well known and well-loved in San Francisco, bring back the art of the marionette puppetry and their classic storytelling to the Festival. The Carnival of the Animals features 3 well known tales - the 'Three Little Pigs', the 'Tortoise and the Hare', and the 'Ugly Duckling' -with the background of the music of Saint-Saens. Utilizing a unique performance style, the puppet and puppeteer are seen in full view of the audience on a raised stage. This is a perfect vehicle for The Fratello Marionettes to both educate and delight.  

This program is part of the Performing Arts Festival. It is an annual event featuring puppets, music, and live performances in libraries throughout the city.

The Hidden Treasures of Korea

Join us for a screening of the documentary 50 Wonders of Korea. This 50-minute film explores the artistic legacies of the country’s 5,000-year history. After the film representatives from the Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project will answer questions and serve a traditional Korean dessert. Paintings, objects, and beautiful traditional costumes will be on display.

Yoga: The Art of Transformation goes beyond postures and delves into how yoga has evolved into a global phenomenon through an exploration of its visual history. Images ranging from benevolent deities and gurus to Tantric goddesses and sinister yogis reveal how yoga practices—and perceptions of them—have transformed over time and across communities.

This docent lecture is offered in conjunction with the exhibit held at the Asian Art Museum Feb. 21 to May 25.
