The Glen Park Branch and all other San Francisco Public Libraries will be closed on Monday, September 2, for Labor Day.
Saturday @ the Movies Presents: Mr. Deeds Goes to Town
Saturday, August 24th
3:00pm
Glen Park Public Library
Longfellow Deeds lives in a small
town in Vermont, writing poetry for greeting cards and playing the tuba in the
town band. His contented life comes to a halt when he inherits a fortune from a
distant uncle. Before long Deeds is living in the big city – and being preyed
upon by an unscrupulous attorney and a hard-nosed reporter from a
sensationalist daily newspaper. Fortunately, it’s hard to cheat an honest man!
Frank Capra directed this film, for
which he won his second Best Director Academy Award. He delayed filming for six
months until Gary Cooper became available to play Longfellow Deeds, as Cooper
was his only choice for the role.
Black and white; 115 minutes.

Database Spotllight: Learning Express
Do you have a test to take?
The San Francisco Public Library offers a variety of
preparation materials for academic and career-related exams. Even if you wait
until the last minute to prepare for your test you can use your library card and
PIN to access study materials for many exams through Learning Express Library, one of the Library’s subscription
databases.
The academic exams covered by the database range
from the 4th grade Starr test to the entrance exam for medical
school. The Jobs & Careers category includes study materials for the Civil
Service exam, as well as for many other professions. There are also sections
for job searching and for taking the U.S. Citizenship exam.

Express Library go to the Library’s homepage (www.sfpl.org)
and log in to your account using your Library card number and your PIN.

Create a user name and password to register. An
email address is not required. By registering you’ll ensure that all of the
eBooks and practice exams you access are kept in one location, called My Center. This makes it easy to return
to exams you haven’t finished and books you’re still using.
Practice tests and eBooks are grouped into Learning Centers. You can select a Learning
Center from the left side of the page or use the link in the center of the page
to see the full list of centers. Categories under the centers may have more
than one test. For example the Learning Center for College Students contains the category Graduate School Entrance Exams Preparation. There are six practice
exams under this category, including the GRE and the LSAT. To search for practice materials for a
particular exam use the search box located above the list of Learning Centers.
Even if an exam is not in your future you may want
to visit Learning Express to enhance your computer skills. The Learning Express
Library includes tutorials for popular software. The interactive courses include
programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as Adobe Photoshop.
In many cases there are tutorials for both Mac and Windows users and for multiple versions of the software.
